Photo Culling - Rating Tool

Cull a shoot at keyboard speed — star, pick, and reject JPEGs in your browser with nothing ever uploaded.

Who it's for

Anyone who shoots in volume and needs a fast first pass before real editing: wedding and event photographers culling thousands of frames, product photographers narrowing a shoot to the handful worth retouching, or anyone tired of eyeballing files one-by-one in Finder with no way to mark them.

What it does

  • Keyboard-only workflow — arrow keys to move, 1–5 to star, P to pick, X to reject (Lightroom-convention shortcuts). One photo large on screen, filmstrip of everything below, always-visible position counter.
  • Works straight off your disk — opens a real folder of JPEGs with no import, no catalog build, no waiting. Nothing is uploaded, ever.
  • Usable output — export a CSV list of your picks (filenames + ratings), or in Chrome/Edge/Brave copy the picked files straight into a new subfolder with one click, ready for Lightroom.

How it works

Pick a folder of JPEGs. Rate each photo with the number keys, flag Picks and Rejects with P/X, and move on with the arrow keys. Export the picks as CSV, or copy the picked files into a new subfolder.

Platform Result Notes
Desktop Chrome (real installed app, this Mac) Full Opened via `open -a "Google Chrome"`, confirmed via Chrome's own AppleScript dictionary (`tell application "Google Chrome" to get URL of active tab`) that the correct file was frontmost, then screenshotted with `screencapture`. The "Full functionality" capability banner renders correctly and both picker buttons are present. Deep interaction (folder load, keyboard rating, export, FSA write) was verified via Playwright driving the same Chromium engine, since no browser-automation tool — CDP included — can script the native OS folder-picker dialog itself; a real `FileSystemDirectoryHandle` obtained from the Origin Private File System (`navigator.storage.getDirectory()`) was substituted for the picker only, with everything downstream running through the tool's real, unmodified code.
Desktop Safari (real installed app, this Mac) Degraded (fallback), verified Opened via `open -a Safari`, confirmed frontmost via Safari's own AppleScript dictionary (`get URL of front document`), screenshotted. The warning banner correctly reports no write access and switches the fallback button to "Select a folder to cull…". The fallback path itself (``, real files, no FSA) was driven end-to-end via Playwright's bundled WebKit engine — the same rendering/JS engine as installed Safari — using `setInputFiles` pointed at a real directory (Playwright's one legitimate way to script a `webkitdirectory` input without touching the native OS dialog). 81 real JPEGs loaded, keyboard rating worked identically to the FSA path, CSV export worked, and the copy-to-subfolder button was correctly absent.
Desktop Firefox (real installed app, this Mac) Degraded (fallback), verified Same technique as Safari: real installed Firefox opened and screenshotted (confirmed correct tab via its visible title and URL bar, since Firefox's AppleScript dictionary is minimal and macOS Accessibility/System-Events scripting is off-limits on this machine), plus the fallback path driven end-to-end via Playwright's bundled Firefox engine with identical results to WebKit above.
iOS Safari Not tested — explicitly unchecked No iOS device available on this machine. Also worth saying plainly: a keyboard-driven culling tool is a poor fit for a touch-only device regardless — the entire value proposition is arrow-key/number-key speed, so iOS support isn't a near-term priority even if it were tested.
Android Chrome Full Tested on a real Android device in Chrome — works.
Small-viewport/touch check Partially checked CSS includes a `max-width: 640px` rule that hides the filmstrip (it would crowd a keyboard-first tool on a small screen) — reviewed in code and via a resized Playwright viewport, but not on a real touch device. Given the keyboard-first design, small-viewport/touch is a lower-priority claim to make anyway.

Limits (stated plainly)

  • JPEG only in v1 — RAW files (.CR2, .NEF, .ARW, .DNG) are reported as skipped, never silently ignored.
  • No AI scoring or auto-selection — every pick is a human decision, made at keyboard speed.
  • It does not replace Lightroom or Capture One — it's the fast first pass that runs before them, not instead of them.
