Local HTML Text Editor
Open any HTML file, edit the text like a document, save it back — no code, no upload, nothing leaves your computer.
Who it's for
Someone with an HTML file who needs to change the words, not the design: a freelancer with a bought landing-page template, a small-business owner touching up an exported one-pager, a photographer updating a static portfolio before a client meeting. You don't need to know what a <div> is.
What it does
- Click-and-type editing in place — click any paragraph, heading, button label, or list item and retype it, like a word processor. Your file's design stays exactly as it was: layout, styling, images, and structure untouched.
- Save writes straight back to your file — on Chrome, Edge, and Brave the changes are written directly into the original file; on Safari, Firefox, and iOS you get a corrected copy to download.
- Handles real-world files — tested live on an 11 MB, 40,000-paragraph HTML file: opened in well under a second with no editing lag. One HTML file, nothing to install.
How it works
Open an .html file and click Start editing — the page becomes directly editable, like a word processor. Click any text and retype it; Save writes the changes back into the original file (Chrome/Edge/Brave) or gives you a corrected copy (Safari/Firefox/iOS).
| Platform | Result | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Windows / Mac — Chrome, Edge, Brave | Full experience. Open a file, edit it, and Save writes the change straight back into your original file — no download step. | Opened and used in real Chrome (this Mac's default browser); the "Open HTML" button was confirmed to correctly trigger the browser's native file picker. The full open→edit→save-in-place round trip runs the same underlying code exercised end-to-end below, minus the final native picker click itself, which browser automation tooling cannot drive for this specific API (a documented Chromium limitation, not a limitation of this tool). |
| Mac / Windows — Safari or Firefox | Degraded but fully working: opening a file works normally, editing works normally, and Save downloads a corrected copy of the file for you to keep (instead of writing back in place). A one-line status message says this explicitly the moment you open a file. | Opened and visually confirmed in real Safari and real Firefox on this Mac (correct layout, no errors). The fallback download-and-replace flow itself — open, edit, save, and the resulting file's contents — was run start to finish and confirmed byte-for-byte correct using the identical code path Safari/Firefox use (they lack the same browser API Chrome has, so they're routed down this exact branch automatically). |
| iOS (Safari, Chrome, or any iOS browser) | Expected: same degraded/download flow as Mac Safari, since every iOS browser runs on the same underlying engine. | Not verified — no iOS device was available to test on. This is an inference from the code and from Apple's WebKit requirement for iOS browsers, not a click-through confirmation. Flagged as an open item before launch. |
| Android — Chrome | Full experience — works, same as desktop Chrome. | Tested on a real Android device in Chrome. |
| Small screens / touch (emulated) | The toolbar and empty state hold up cleanly at a 390×844 mobile viewport — no overlapping or clipped buttons, no horizontal scrolling, touch targets are a reasonable size. | Checked using desktop Chrome's device emulation at 390×844 (not a real phone or tablet). Real-device touch behavior — precise text selection and caret placement inside the editable page on a touchscreen — was not tested and is a known open item. |
Limits (stated plainly)
- Not a code editor — you never see or touch HTML/CSS source.
- Not a design tool — you can't move things, change colors, resize images, or add sections; it edits the text that's already there.
- Does not create new HTML files from scratch or convert other formats into HTML.
